Bloodline To Be Basis For Eligibility to Scottish Team

There has been much debate in recent days about the issue of eligibility to play for Scotland. The FIFA regulations state that a player who has a British passport can play for one of the Home Associations if he or she is eligible, whereas a gentleman's agreement we have with the other Home Associations states that players should be picked on the basis of a blood line.

We have spoken with the other Home Associations and can confirm that it is our collective intention to honour the Gentleman's agreement and that, subsequently, players will only be eligible to play for Scotland if they qualify through the blood route.

Scottish FA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said:

"There has been some confusion and much debate in recent days about whether or not Nacho Novo can play for Scotland.

"On one hand the FIFA regulations say that George Burley can pick eligible players who hold a British passport - and on the other we have the gentlemen's agreement with the other Home Associations that says that we will pick players based on their blood line.

"I have today sought to clarify the issue. We have had discussions with the other associations in the past couple of days and I've found out that everyone is adhering to our agreement and that, subsequently, we're all going down the line that will be bloodline at the moment.

"Now at some stage in the future one or more of us may change our opinion on that - we may get together and change our decision and go for the full FIFA regulation - but at the moment, we're all sticking to the gentleman's agreement."

Scotland to play Argentina at Hampden on Wednesday 19th October

The Scottish FA confirmed that they have secured a deal to play Argentina at Hampden in a Tennent's International Challenge match on Wednesday November 19th this year.

Following extensive negotiations between the two parties, the ticket prices have been set at the same level as the forthcoming World Cup Qualifying Match against Norway. This being a significant improvement on the prices that were suggested when the prospect of the match was first discussed earlier this year.

The prices are:- Adults £25, £30 and £35. Family £18/£10.

The match will be televised live on Sky Sports with an 8pm kick-off. Details of how supporters will be able to purchase tickets will be made available in due course.

Scottish FA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said:-
"I am delighted that we have managed to strike a deal to bring Argentina to Scotland. When we were speaking to the representatives, it was clear that the Argentinians wanted to play us and were just as excited as we were about a match at Hampden.

We are very pleased that we will be able to put on the game at a pricing structure that will appeal to fans. "We want Scotland fans to see the players pit themselves against the best in the world and there are few teams better than Argentina. This is going to be a great match and a fantastic occasion and I know that George and the team will put on a show that will do the country proud."

National Coach George Burley said:-
"We cannot wait to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world and look forward to our fans giving the Argentinians a great Scottish Hampden welcome when they come here in November."
